There are so many ways that we use alphabetical order throughout our day. It was nice to know for certain that I wasn’t wasting my students valuable learning time. Now really, I already knew what I found out about alphabetizing. Is it the most important thing you’re going to teach? Probably not. And not just for the sake of putting words in ABC order. That year I did some research and discovered that yes, it is important that students learn and practice how to alphabetize. NOTE: Putting words in alphabetical order isn’t the most important thing you’ll do all day… hopefully. Of course students are learning how to alphabetize, but is there a real purpose? A good enough purpose that we spend our time on it, instead of something else? ![]() I have to admit that I was a little stumped at first. It is such a methodocal process, most of my kids actually liked putting their spelling words in ABC order.ĭuring a parent conference meeting, a parent asked me why I made my students alphabetize their spelling words every single week.
